Developments

Well Ryan and I have had an interesting week. His family has been here for education week, which was really fun, but the weirdest things have decided to happen to us medically this summer.

My Adventures:

A week previous to last wednesday when I got home from work, we went to go visit Tina and Buddy. While we were there I realized that I had a really weird little bump on the center of my wrist that made my fingers go numb when you played with it. I showed it to Ryan's mom and she said she had one similar to it on her leg, but it didn't make anything go numb. So the next morning I woke up and I had a smaller, similar bump right next to it that hurt more than the first when you touched it. So I made a doctor's appointment for that afternoon and went in. The doctor took some X-rays and said that nothing looked broken and that it must be calicified soft tissue because it didn't show up on the X-ray as bone. He also said that it was really weird that it was so hard as it was because normally it's more squishy. Also it made my fingers go numb on the wrong side of my hand according to the doctor. I didn't seem to have a loss of strength in that hand so he told me to take advil and use it as normal and if it didn't go away by the following monday to come back and he'll help me make an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon (oh goodie!). So driving home that Saturday from where Ryan's family was I tweaked my wrist some how (almost like cracking/popping your wrist) and it hurt so bad I couldn't do anything with it for a few hours. This wasn't too good because Ryan can't drive with his leg and we don't have power steering, so driving with one hand is kinda out of the question. Needless to say Ryan and I got home with Ryan helping to turn the wheel when we were in the parking lot. The next day the bumps were still there, and they were there on Monday for my appointment. But now the first bump didn't make my fingers go numb anymore, but it hurt to put my wrist in tension and to bend it all the way up or down. So I made an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon for a week from that wednesday. (Because there is only one orthopedic surgeon who does wrists/hands and he only comes in once a week, and he was booked for the next wednesday) Well Friday comes around and I wake up, and the bumps are still there. We get ready and go to work, with me tweaking my wrist again on the way out of our parking lot. It wasn't as bad as last time, but it still twinged for a bit after I did it (10-15min). About 2 hours later I was thinking about having to take Ryan to the doctor and so checked on my bumps. Voila! They had disappeared! I have no idea what happened to make them disappear or if tweaking it made them disappear or what. But it's all better now and my wrist seems fine. Now all I have to do is call the orthopedic surgeon and cancel my appointment..

Ryan's Adventures:

Well while my wrist was hurting, this past tuesday night Ryan really started not sleeping well. (Which meant that both of us didn't sleep well) And he started taking pain pills to help him sleep and during the day because his knee started to throb/ache. Then on wednesday morning he woke up and couldn't straighten his knee again. He could get it to about a 40degree angle and that was it. (After his surgery the doctor said he could sleep with his brace off as long as he didn't put anything weight bearing on it without the brace) So immediately after he couldn't straighten it we called the health center, explained what had happened and made an appointment with his orthopedic surgeon for Friday. Although he couldn't straighten it, up to that point it felt fine, so he went to work on crutches and survived. So yesterday we met with his doctor and the doctor said for him to work with his knee and make it straight again so he could go have another MRI. So Ryan got his knee mostly straight (~10 degrees), put on the brace (which would help straighten it over time) and we went to get an MRI. The doctor said that 2 things could have happened. It could just be stiff muscles and sore there making it hard to move and straighten, or it could mean that his repair job had come undone, or partially undone and was now repairing itself in a "ripple" which caused the extra tightening. The MRI should tell us what it is, and if it needs to be repaired again, then he will be in surgery on Tuesday. This time they probably will just cut out the offending meniscus instead of trying to repair it.

Anyways, that's our life recently. Right now Ryan's doing fine and his leg is straight, although it's harder for both of us to sleep because he has to be in his brace 24/7 except for showers. We both hope that his knee will be okay and that he won't have to go into surgery again and start all over on his recovery. We find out on Monday how his MRI looks when we see the doctor's assistent because his doctor will be in surgery again.

Hoping all is well with you.
